Jeremy Platts

Jeremy Platts came to Hong Kong in 1978 and spent 14 years in the service of the Royal Hong Kong Police, almost exclusively in the criminal investigation department, where he reached the rank of Detective Chief Inspector. He served 10 years in the Commercial Crime Bureau, where he specialised in the field of commercial crime, which included investigation, prosecution, fraud intelligence and money laundering prevention.

He joined Standard Chartered Bank in 1992 as Head of Security, where he gained a solid grounding  in physical security and risk assessment before he advanced to the position of Regional Head, Investigation and Money Laundering Prevention for Asia-Pacific. In this role he travelled widely and oversaw the operation of the anti-money laundering policies and standards of the Group. In Hong Kong, he acted for many years as the Country Money Laundering Prevention Officer, chairing the Anti-Money Laundering Committee of the bank, and preparing for regular reviews by UK and Hong Kong regulators.

In 2001, he obtained his MBA from Henley Management College in England after completing his thesis on the impact of cultural awareness during mergers and acquisitions.

In October 2003, Mr Platts established his own consultancy to serve the needs of the banking sector and to meet the increasing focus on the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing. His service in the banking field and exposure to the financial authorities give him unique insight into both the requirements of the customer and the expectation of the regulators.

In February 2006, Mr Platts was appointed Consultant (Anti-Money Laundering) to the HKMA, during which time he was tasked with restructuring and raising the profile of the HKMA AML Specialist Examination Team and revising the onsite examination methodology to provide a more value-added product. In his capacity as a financial sector expert, he participated in the mutual evalutaion of Canada by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) in March 2007 and was interviewed in November 2007 during the FATF Mutual Evaluation of Hong Kong.

In June 2008, he commenced a two-year deployment as Executive Director in Financial Services Risk Management at one of the Big Four accountancy firms as the Far East Area AML Service Leader tasked with raising the profile of AML service offerings across the Asia Pacific Region.

In 2012, Mr Platts took on the role of Chief Compliance Officer at MPayMe Ltd, an e-commerce start up looking to revolutionise the world of mobile payments. This offered the opportunity of a green-field approach to build a compliance team and structure to meet the innovative challenges of the e-commerce market and he continues to work part-time in this field today with Zwoop Ltd.

Mr Platts is a seasoned speaker and has lectured at fraud and money laundering prevention conferences in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East on numerous occasions. He is also a Certified Fraud Examiner
